If you practice any form of martial arts, you should know that during competitions, an unshapely uniform will put you at a disadvantage. In Judo, the uniform is called the judo gi. The three parts of the judo gi are the jacket (uwagi) which is very heavy, the pants (shitabaki), and the belt (obi) which has varying colors depending on the wearer’s rank. Traditionally, the two competitors wear white but in 1997 the Judo Federation decided that one wears white and the other wears blue to easily distinguish one contestant from the other. The jacket should cover the thighs and the left side should cross over the right. The minimum overlap should be 8 inches. The sleeves should not be shorter than 2 inches above the wrist joint. The trousers should be spotlessly clean and should not be more than 2 inches above the ankle joint. The obi prevents the jacket from getting loose. It should be long enough to go around the waist twice and each protrusion should be 8-12 inches long when the belt is tied. The knot should always be at the front because if it goes to the back and the player falls backwards, he may be injured. A white T-shirt, long enough to tuck inside the trousers or a white leotard should be worn by women contestants.
Investing in high quality gear and equipment is a must if you are a martial artist. Many online shops offer inexpensive judo ki and ata sparring gear. The best way to get a good deal is to look around and ask for prices first before buying anything.
